What Good SEO Looks Like in the Saudi Market

SEO in Saudi Arabia is not the same as SEO in the UK or the US, and agencies that treat it as such tend to produce mediocre results for their KSA clients. The language is different, the search behavior is different, the platform dominance is different, and the technical requirements have specific wrinkles that matter.

Here's what good SEO in the Saudi market actually looks like.

Google Dominates in KSA, and That Shapes Everything

Google's share of the Saudi search market is above 95%. There's no meaningful Bing or Yahoo presence to factor in, no local search engine competing for attention. This means your SEO strategy is, in practice, a Google strategy. The good news is that makes things simpler. The implication is that ranking well on Google in Arabic is the primary objective, and everything else flows from that.

Arabic Keyword Research is Its Own Discipline

This is the part that most non-specialist agencies get wrong.

Arabic keyword research is not about taking your English keywords and putting them through a translation tool. The way people search in Arabic is shaped by dialect, by formality, by how search engines parse Arabic script, and by word forms that don't have direct English equivalents.

Modern Standard Arabic (Fusha) and Saudi colloquial Arabic produce different search patterns. A business selling cars in Riyadh needs to understand that people searching for "سيارات مستعملة للبيع" (used cars for sale) may phrase that query differently depending on age group and whether they're searching on mobile or desktop. The search volumes and competition levels can differ significantly between formal and colloquial variations of the same query.

Additionally, Arabic morphology means one root word can produce dozens of forms. A keyword strategy that doesn't account for this misses real search volume.

If an agency tells you they do Arabic SEO but can't walk you through how they actually do keyword research in Arabic, they're probably translating, not researching.

Google Business Profile Matters More Than Many Businesses Realize

For local businesses in Riyadh, the Google Business Profile is often the most immediate SEO win available. When someone searches for a service "in Riyadh" or "near me" in Arabic, the map pack results appear prominently. An optimized GBP with accurate Arabic and English information, real photos, regular posts, and genuine reviews can drive significant local visibility.

Many Saudi businesses have unclaimed or poorly maintained GBP listings. Getting this right is basic, and it produces results faster than most other SEO activities. Yet it's often overlooked in favor of more complex strategies.

Make sure your business name, address, and phone number in your GBP match exactly what's on your website. Consistency across all online mentions of your business is a ranking signal. Arabic and English versions of your business name should both be present.

Mobile-First Indexing and Saudi Mobile Usage

Saudi Arabia has very high smartphone penetration and mobile internet usage. A large share of Saudi Google searches happen on mobile devices. Google uses mobile-first indexing, which means it primarily uses the mobile version of your site for ranking and indexing.

This has practical implications. Your Arabic content needs to render correctly on small screens. Your fonts need to be legible at mobile sizes (Arabic script can become hard to read below certain sizes). Page speed on mobile is a ranking factor through Core Web Vitals. A site that performs well on desktop but poorly on mobile is being evaluated on its mobile version. That's where many Saudi business websites are quietly losing rankings.

Core Web Vitals and Arabic Sites

Google's Core Web Vitals metrics (Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, Interaction to Next Paint) apply equally to Arabic and English content, but Arabic sites sometimes have specific issues.

RTL layouts that aren't implemented cleanly can cause layout shifts (CLS) as the page renders. Arabic fonts loaded from external sources add render-blocking requests if not handled correctly. Pages with mixed RTL and LTR content need careful font loading strategy to avoid visual instability.

A good SEO agency working on Arabic sites should be checking Core Web Vitals specifically for the Arabic versions of your pages, not just the English ones.

What to Look for in an SEO Agency Serving KSA

Demonstrated Arabic content capability. Not "we work with Arabic content." Show me examples. What did you write, for whom, and what happened to their rankings?

Keyword research methodology. Ask them to walk you through how they'd approach keyword research for a business in your sector in Saudi Arabia. If the answer is "we use [tool name] and translate the results," that's a useful indicator.

Local SEO knowledge. Do they know what a Google Business Profile is and how to optimize it for KSA? Have they done this before?

Technical SEO awareness. Can they speak to Core Web Vitals, mobile-first indexing, and RTL technical SEO? These aren't advanced topics for a serious SEO agency.

Reporting that connects to business outcomes. Traffic going up is not success. Leads going up, calls going up, qualified inquiries going up — those are success. Be clear about what you're measuring before the engagement starts.

Red Flags

  • "Guaranteed #1 rankings." Nobody can promise this legitimately.
  • No Arabic-speaking team members but claims of Arabic SEO expertise.
  • Reporting that only shows impressions and clicks without any conversion data.
  • Black-hat tactics like link farms or keyword stuffing in Arabic text. These can produce short-term results and longer-term penalties.
